Our Story
A Geneva atelier.
Four weaving regions.
One standard.
CarpetArtisan was founded to make hand-knotted rugs the way they were made before factories were invented. Designed in Switzerland. Woven, by hand, across Afghanistan, Armenia, India and Tibet. Sold direct, without the markup of the dealer system.
Geneva, on the Quai du Mont-Blanc.
CarpetArtisan is a small studio in central Geneva. We are designers, textile specialists, and craftspeople — not a brand built by a marketing team. Every rug is sketched, weave-planned, colour-matched, and quality-controlled in this one room before it goes on a loom.
The atelier is open by appointment to clients, designers, and architects who want to see swatches, walk through a brief, or look at finished pieces. Geneva is a half-day flight from most European capitals; we recommend planning the visit around lunch on Rue du Rhône.
Afghanistan, Armenia, India & Tibet. Women who knot by hand.
Our weaving partnership is with women artisans across Afghanistan, Armenia, India, and Tibet, whose knowledge is learned by hand and passed within families over generations. We work with them directly — no intermediaries — and fair compensation is the foundation of the partnership, not a footnote to it.
We partner with the workshops directly, paying fair compensation to the women who weave. We have visited every quarter since the partnerships began and would put any client in touch with our partners directly if asked.
Direct from the loom. No dealer markup.
A hand-knotted rug sold through the traditional dealer system passes through three to five intermediaries between the loom and the living room. Each adds a margin. The final retail price is typically four to six times the cost at the loom.
We sell direct. The price you see is the price for the rug, the white-glove delivery, the lifetime repair programme, and the buyback option — not the price after five dealers have taken their cut. The maths is the whole point.
